My Philosophy of Photography
Art is everywhere. We just need to learn to see it. My favorite photographic hunting ground is the everyday world-filled with things we all see, but don’t notice the intricate beauty and art they have to offer. I used to challenge my students, “Don’t just look. See, observe, explore and fall in love with your subject.” That’s exactly what I do.
To me photographs are visual records of the relationships I form with the subjects I shoot. I begin the relationship by allowing myself to be drawn into the visual intricacies the subject has to offer. As I explore the lines, colors, shades, shapes, and forms I make a photographic record of what I see and feel. The subject entices, I explore and shoot, as I discover new perspectives, and experiment with different angles, playing off existing light to maximize and capture what the subject offers.
I don’t look for great shots or plan my pictures. Nor do I follow any rules of composition, color balance or extreme perspective. I just open my mind, let the subject entice me and fall in love. My goal is simply to record the relationship that develops. I’m often surprised at how faithfully the photographs reflect what I saw and felt. And I’m always rewarded with the deep joy of discovering the intrinsic artistic beauty that surrounds us all. I’d like to share my world view with you. By the way, all of my photos are in camera compositions.
